01 / WHAT WE’RE BUILDING
J1 Compass helps international physicians explore clinics and hospitals in shortage-designated areas, starting with their specialty and the cities they actually want to live in.
Search by specialty and the cities or communities you’re considering. Focus on places where you want to put down roots, near family, friends, and the things that make a place yours.
Bring public CMS physician and practice data together with HRSA shortage designations to identify clinics and hospitals in potentially eligible locations.
Our beta uses AI-assisted research to look for job postings at potential employers. We’re developing application support, with the goal of helping you prepare, review, and authorize submissions.
Some opportunities never reach the job boards. Build a ranked list of places to investigate, then use our AI-assisted research and practical outreach framework to start conversations about potential roles. The framework grew out of our own search.
An opportunity to investigate, not a guaranteed opening. A shortage designation alone does not establish J-1 waiver eligibility. Confirm current designations, employer participation, and state requirements with qualified immigration counsel.
02 / WHY WE BUILT THIS
A founder’s story about finding a way forward when the usual paths weren’t working.
My partner did his residency on a J-1 visa, but spent only his final year in the U.S. That left him very little time, and almost no local network, to find a job here.
A waiver position would shape everything: our relationship, where we’d live, where we’d start our family, and our future together. It was the most stressful stretch of our lives.
For months, we checked PracticeMatch and 3RNET every day. We applied to openings, spoke with recruiters, and joined every online community we could find. But we wanted to live in a major city, ideally in California or Washington, near family and friends. For a specialist, those opportunities rarely appeared on the boards.
Eventually, we stopped waiting for the same listings and calls. We learned how to find shortage-designated areas inside the cities where we wanted to live. We cross-checked government websites, spoke with immigration lawyers, and made hundreds of calls to clinics and hospital systems. Along the way, we developed a framework for finding opportunities and starting conversations about potential roles.
Within eight weeks of taking this approach, he signed with a clinic in the heart of San Francisco — our first choice.
We also received three offers in the Bay Area and Seattle, each within an hour’s commute. That was our experience, not a promise of anyone else’s outcome. But it showed us that there was another way to search.
Now we’re turning that experience into an AI-assisted agent and a guide to the framework, so more physicians can explore a future in a place they actually want to live.
Built from a search that changed our lives.
03 / THE COMPANY
We’re an early-stage team building technology for international physicians navigating the J-1 waiver job search. Our mission is to make fragmented research easier to act on, so physicians can make more informed decisions about their careers and their lives.
We use public data and AI-assisted research to support discovery and outreach. We’re currently in beta, learning from physician feedback and developing the product around the realities of this search.
OUR NEXT CHAPTER
We’re in beta, and feedback is helping shape what comes next. Want to share your experience or learn more? Get in touch. Access to the finder will be added here as we develop the site.
